In Summary

Here’s a fun fact about squares: A square with all sides of length 4 has an perimeter of 16 units and an area of 16 square units. It is the only square that has a perimieter and area that are numerically the same.

Measuring a room: When you’re trying to figure out how much paint or carpet you need to buy for a room, you’ll need to know the area of the floor or walls.

Building a fence: When you’re planning to build a fence around your yard, you’ll need to know the perimeter of the yard to determine how much fencing material you’ll need.

Planting a garden: If you’re planning to plant a rectangular garden bed, you’ll need to know the area of the bed to determine how many plants you can fit in it.

Wrapping a present: When you’re wrapping a present in rectangular wrapping paper, you’ll need to know the perimeter of the box to determine how much paper you need.

Two-dimensional shapes: Rectangles are just one type of two-dimensional shape, and students will often study other shapes such as other quadrilaterals, triangles, and circles as well.

Volume: In addition to studying two-dimensional shapes, students may also learn about three-dimensional shapes and how to calculate their volume and surface area. The volume of a three-dimensional shape is the amount of space it occupies, and the surface area is the total area of all of the faces of the figure.
